In September 2019, the third chapter of The House Collective’s art programme ‘Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life’ unfolded at The Middle House in Shanghai.
Drawing on the city’s fashion-forward energy, artist Katja Loher collaborated with Shanghai-based fashion brand Dirty Pineapple to create five outfits representing the Five Chinese Elements which feature in Katja’s evocative video sculptures. As part of the collaboration, Dirty Pineapple created a limited-edition capsule streetwear collection that could be ordered at the pop-up display at the House.
The multi-sensory journey started in The Middle House’s lobby before moving to the indoor pool and beautiful spiral staircase, the different spaces bringing to life the Five Elements universe through sculptural shapes and vivid projections.
To complement the art, a special menu of artistic Five Elements cocktails was crafted by acclaimed Bar Master Gary Hu at Sui Tang Li. Each cocktail told a story about the Five Elements – from The Golden Buddha which represents Water and is served in a traditional Chinese vase-inspired glass, to Her Favourite Boulevardier representing Fire which is served smoked under a cocktail cloche.
