ENCOUNTERS ACROSS CULTURES MEETS TOKYO

ENCOUNTERS ACROSS CULTURES 2023

Time x Space x Evolution. A narrative by five dance artists across different ages, nationalities and dance disciplines. Our belief that creativity comes best from crossing cultures is the driving force behind our art programme Encounters Across Cultures. This extension of the programme told the story of honoured tradition, modernity, harmony and new possibilities as dancers engaged and connected through contrasting movements and spaces.

The dance flowed through the Tokyu Department Store’s flagship store and on to the streets of Shibuya. As the show closed, they gathered on the store's rooftop where they “saluted” to the site's future as our new House.

“Dignity. Affection. Passion. Vitality. Nostalgia. To see the performers working collectively in constant pursuit of challenge and innovation, I cannot help but feel that this could be the driving force behind the emergence of new and as-yet-unseen traditions."
Yuh Egami, Choreographer

Our cross-cultural team of dancers and creatives came together for a captivating performance. Working towards a common goal with the shared language of movement, the team found inspiration in their differences to create a dance full of new possibilities.

An encounter between a Noh master, Reijiro, and a prima ballerina, Hana, at Tokyu Department Store's elevators.  Growing up, this is the space where Hana would wait for her parents to pick her up after ballet classes.

Flamenco meets hip-hop as Beníto and Kyoka have a fleeting encounter on the escalator of Bunkamura - a theatre which hosted countless world class artists, and a space where Benito has also performed in.

Our dance artists came together to celebrate the incredible creatvity that can come from breaking down boundaries between culture, age, and disciplines.

Taking flight on the rooftop, Gildas salutes to the site's new future as our Tokyo House with his powerful penché.

Motion and passion. Flamenco dance artist Beníto explores the iconic space through powerful yet contrasting movement and emotion.

A world champion in hip-hop, Osaka native Kyoka is explosively creative and a chameleon of the craft.

Reijiro is a master of Noh, Japan's classical dance drama art, but unafraid to perform outside the scope of its traditional repertoire.

Expert technique, impassioned expression and elegant performance form the foundation for prima ballerina Hana as she moves through the halls of the Tokyu Department Store.

Five dancers, five wildly different backgrounds. Our creative team found joy and reward in pushing boundaries as they crossed cultures and disciplines.

As individual as our Houses, the dance artists' personalities shone through in this collaborative tour de force.

"There were these moments of ‘void' – moments when our brains were silenced and time ceased to exist.  It was just our breath and the 37 trillion cells in each of our bodies. We were tapping into each other’s passion for this once-in-a-lifetime artistic encounter.  We all felt it – the dancers, the director and the crew. It transcended age, cultures and differences."
Patsy Lo, Executive Producer and Choreographer, sml Dance

Kyoka explores the parking lot through movement. Wherever the dance led them, our dancers found new ways to engage with the surrounding environment.

Masters of their craft, each dancer put in the hard work and long hours over their lifetime to get them to this point. They drew on their rich experience and expertise as they collaborated across disciplines and cultures.

Reijiro and Kyoka share a laugh on a break.

The film crew detailed the dance performance carefully, turning a transient moment into a lasting work of art.

The performance ended on the rooftop of the Tokyu Department Store in a salute to the site's new future as our House.

Beníto uses a quiet moment to look after the tools of his trade, his flamenco shoes.
